    moving-boxes-extra-largeI have moved back to DC from my Home State and I have been very busy cleaning, donating things to Goodwill and listing some furniture on Craigslist.  The Big Move that I am referring to is the end of my lease in July.  Right now, I am living in a 1 bed room apartment and after I graduate I will likely end up sharing a house or apartment with other people.  So,  I need to get rid/sell things so I am able to downsize

    • State #1 Bar Exam : July 27-28, 2010
    • State #2 Bar Exam: July 28 and 29, 2010
    • Apt. Lease Ends: July 31, 2010

    I have a big decision to make about whether or not I want to extend my lease by one month so that I would move out at the end of August instead of July.  Do I really want to take the hardest exam of my life and then come back and move out of my apartment?  If I can avoid paying one extra month’s rent then I definitely do.

    It also depends on what exactly I will do in August.  Traditionally, law student’s do a post-bar trip after the bar exam.  I haven’t decided if I will and if so, where I will go.  If  I take a trip then I need to be out of the apartment so I can use the August rent for the trip.

    There are things that take up space, you don’t use it but nevertheless it is hard to get rid of.  The perfect example is yearbooks.  I threw out my middle school yearbooks.  But the high school yearbooks were more difficult.  I ended up tearing out the pages from my high school year books that I wanted to keep and putting the rest in recycling.

  • Wow, the end of July sounds so hectic! I think that the hardest part of being a student is the constant state of flux for housing — personally, I don’t mind where I’m living nearly as much as having to plan to pack up. I cannot wait until after my graduation (which happens to be considerably farther in the future), when I can find a long-term place to finally be home!

  • Wow, that’s a tough one! I wonder if you explained that it might take a few extra days to get out (because of exams) if he would give you a break…

  • Moving is hard no matter when you do it. At least you’re starting to pare down your stuff now though. That will definitely help for later.

  • @Caity
    You go it Caity! As a student I believe I have never lived in one place for more than a year.

    @Don
    I will check with the apartment to see if I can do just a week more and if they will only charge me for that. When I moved in I asked about this and the manger said that won’t be possible and I have to do a month but now we have a new manager so it may change.

    @MeinMillions
    Yes, I hope starting now will help because I need everything done before mid-may when my bar classes start.

  • I never even bought my high school yearbook :) .

  • High school yearbooks are so expensive — mine were $70ish. (And yes, this was a public school, not a private prep academy) Definitely not the best investment in the long run…

  • @Caity and Kasey

    Yes, they are so expensive and they are such a waste of money! And back then you had to have the yearbook so you could pass it around to everyone and sign it. I think they were a necessary item back then and in some ways still do even though I just threw them away!

  • I agree about the necessity — my sister and I both got identical copies for that very reason!

  • @Caity

    My brother and I got identical copies for two of the four years too!

  • It’s so hard to purge stuff, but it’s really freeing at the same time! Where would you put all your stuff if you moved out early and went on the trip?

  • Good luck on the selling furniture and on the upcoming move! What’re you going to do for furniture in your new place? If you have some favorite pieces I might just keep them / get storage for a few months.

  • @WellHeeled
    Thanks! I do have favorite pieces and they are Ikea so I am selling them because something tells me I might come across them again on Craigslist! :-)

  • Are you really going to be able to pack for a move while studying for an exam. Is the trip really that important? You will be coming back from a trip to uncertainty of your living situation

    • @D. James Rice
      I have been thinking about it for a month and I’ve decided not to do a trip after the bar. I need to stay in the country and find a job. I think I will likely delay the move by a month.
      Thanks for the comment!
