There are some things that I simply will not pay for and probably won’t ever pay for.  I view these expenditures as equivalent to throwing my money out the window.  Here are some things my wallet stays shut for:
Think I'll just keep my money in here

Think I'll just keep my money in here

    • Magazine subscriptions

Why pay for magazine subscriptions when you can just go to the library and read a magazine?

    • TV/Cable

I get all my entertainment from the internet and I don’t waste as much time by getting hooked on rather predictable t.v. shows with stereotypical characters filled with advertisements that make me want things I don’t need.

    • Manicures/Pedicures

I have to say I have been very tempted to get a manicure but shelling out $15-$30 for my nails would be such a huge waste of money.  I am not paying for it.

    • Bottled Water

I can get my own bottle and fill it with water.  Sure, the bottled water is nice and shiny looking and tastes slightly better but it is not so good that I would pay $1 or more.

    •  Designer Clothing

I have never been a fan of a particular brand and I don’t feel the inclination to show off to my friends that I can afford the brand.  This is also way too high school-ish.

    •  New Furniture

When I first moved to DC I didn’t have a single piece of furniture except an office chair.  I bought everything used using craigslist.  I furnished my apartment with IKEA furniture for a fraction of the cost.

    •  Music

I love listening to music but I have never bought music because I can listen to it on the radio or online for free.

    • Make up

I don’t pay for make-up because I usually don’t have enough time to put them on in the morning and I have reasonably good skin and don’t need to cover up anything, so I just let my natural beauty shine!

    • Extended Warranties

I haven’t had the need to use them even once so, when the sales associate asks me if I want extended coverage in a you-know-you-should-get-this-just-in-case I say “no, thanks.”

    •  A Fancy Schmanzy Phone

I have a basic cell phone that I have had for two years now.  I refuse to sell out for a fancy i-phone or blackberry just to “keep up.”  I am going to use my cell phone until it stops working and only then will I upgrade.  And when I do upgrade it will be something basic, affordable and with functions I need not whatever phone happens to be the latest craze.

What about you?  What are some things that your wallet stays shut for?

  • Great Article! You’ve brought some things to light that I didn’t think about before.

Especially the piece about the TV/Cable… I really don’t watch TV hardly ever, mostly, like you, I am always on the internet. Plus when you are in the mood for the occassional movie (that’s not from the Library), there is always hulu.com. If it wasn’t for my family, (especially the kids and the disney channel) I’d probably cancel my cable subscription today.

The furniture solution was very brilliant! I wish I had that option when I started college (then again, craigslist didn’t exist).

Another great thing to kick to the curb would be the phone landline (you may have already done this). There are great alternatives (skye and magicjack?), and you always have your cell phone for when the power is out. I would recommend getting an additional back battery for the cell phone though, just to be safe.

    Nice job! :)

  • This is the first time that I have agreed with 100% of someone’s “I will not buy” list

I am on board with every single one of those items!!!!!

  • @Money Reasons
Don, thanks for dropping by! You’re right. I don’t have a landline. Good suggestion about getting an extra battery back.

    @FB
Great to have someone concur with me 100%!
